Park Technician

Participates, plans and directs the maintenance, development, improvement, care of campgrounds, open space recreational areas, buildings, picnic tables, grills, roads, trails, shelters, gates, fences and related facilities.  

Perform routine service and maintenance of equipment used in parks, such as vehicles, tractors, mowers, small engines, chainsaws, weed trimmers, and other equipment.  

Collect fees from users of park facilities while keeping records of receipts, camper registration, attendance and miscellaneous park activities.  Perform other incidental duties as needed, such as cutting firewood, clearing of trails and signage updates.  

Assist with planning, designing and building of structures and equipment within the conservation system which involves carpentry skills, metal work, masonry, shingling, landscaping, plumbing and electrical work.

Wages: $43,000 - 46,000 per year. This position will be full time and includes county health insurance, IPERS, vacation time, sick leave, comp time, and county holidays.  

The work week is non-typical, but generally 40 hours per week, occasionally up to 55 to 65 hours per week as needed. Required to work evenings, weekends and holidays as assigned.

Natural Resource Manager

Review, develop and implementation of management plans for all prairies, preserves and public hunting areas under management of the Butler County Conservation Board.  

Apply natural resource management practices on both public and private land including, but not limited to prescribed burning, planting native grasses, food plots, trees, shrubs, mowing, applying chemicals, timber stand improvement, implementing new practices and long-range planning.

Perform general maintenance on managed areas including, but not limited to fence repairs, signage posting, trail clearing, snow removal and pesticide application.

Administer and oversee departments prescribed fire program by keeping records, maintaining equipment and safety gear.  

Collect fees from users of park facilities while keeping records of receipts, camper registration, attendance and miscellaneous park activities.

Wages: $46,000 - 50,000 per year. This position will be full time and includes county health insurance, IPERS, vacation time, sick leave, comp time, and county holidays.

  • -The Butler County Conservation Board is now accepting applications for seasonal Conservation Intern position. This position will assist with general park maintenance, trail maintenance, and habitat establishment.
  • - This is a great opportunity for students working towards a degree in the Natural Resource Field. While some mowing and trimming isrequired, a majority of the time is spent assisting full-time staff with projects and general maintenance. Employees will be given the opportunity to learn how to operate work-related equipment including chainsaws, tractors and skid loader. Employees will work an average of 40 hours a week with some weekends and holidays required. Work setting is primarily outdoors in areas such as campgrounds, public hunting areas, prairies and preserves, bike trail and shop. 

Salary

  • - $11.00 to $13.00 per hour

Job Description

The Seasonal Naturalist Internship is sponsored by the Butler County Conservation Board and is based at Allan and Fayette Meyer Nature Center. The naturalist intern is under the supervision of the Butler County Conservation Board Naturalist. This program seeks to develop the intern's practical skills in environmental education and interpretation, to stimulate personal growth and development, and to increase the intern’s background and interest in environmental education, natural history, ecology and conservation of natural resources. The seasonal naturalist intern will receive valuable, practical experience and continuing education during employment.  

The naturalist intern will assist the Butler County Naturalist with developing, planning, organizing and presenting environmental education and outdoor recreation programs. The intern will also help with special events for the public, schools and other community groups. The seasonal intern will work the equivalent of a full-time assignment on a flexible weekly schedule.  

Other major duties include:

- Planning, assisting and leading summer day camps

- Designing interpretive and promotional materials

– Digital media skills (social media, website development, video editing, etc)

- Create and improve displays at Allan and Fayette Meyer Nature Center

- Writing newsletter articles and press releases

- Nature Center maintenance and animal care

- Develop at least one new educational activity and one interpretive exhibit or other teaching aid for permanent use in the Butler County Conservation Board environmental education program

- Other projects and duties may include nature center host, resource management activities, professional development opportunities, radio interviews, etc.

Salary
